Defining Occupational Therapy
If you’re asking yourself, “What is Occupational Therapy?”, we can help answer this question for you.
Occupational Therapy is a healthcare rehabilitation profession that focuses on enabling people to do the things they want and need to do in their everyday lives, whether that be at work, home, school, and/or hobbies and treat people of all ages, from infant to adult/senior.
Occupational Therapists work with people who are experiencing illness, accident/injury, disability or are recovering from a medical event, such as stroke, cancer, or an operation.
OTs create treatment programs based on an assessment of a persons abilities in order to make improvement in their functional skills necessary for life tasks.
These programs are for:
a child with developmental delays in order to fully participate in play and school
addressing upper body soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia) injuries or pain that is interfering with function, such as with golfers elbow, tennis elbow or carpel tunnel
helping an injured worker recover from work related injuries and return back to that job.
helping people experiencing changes in how they think or remember things to carry out their daily tasks whether at home, school or work
working with a person to adapt their environment and/or teach compensation skills in order to function and remain as independently as possible.

It is the philosophy of MFOT that the therapist is the evaluator and coach to the patient to provide education about the patients deficits and establish an appropriate rehab program that empowers the patient to take control early on in his/her own rehab care.
This means frequency of visits can be as little as once a month, once a week, or several times a week, based on agreed upon frequency need. The patient will be provided a comprehensive home exercise program that will be reassessed, upgraded and modified as the patient improves.
